Frank Lampard again failed to impress as Chelsea dropped point in Stamford Bridge against Aston Villa in the ongoing English Premier League.
The January transfer window will commence in less than a week.
Clubs across Europe are gearing up to bolster their squad with new players to help them continue the 2020/2021 season. English Premier League Giants Chelsea are keen on offloading a few players and one of them is Marcos Alonso whose days appears numbered at the Stamford Bridge.
According to media reports, Spanish Laliga table toppers Atletico Madrid are interested in signing 30 year old Marcos Alonso and have began negotiations for him.
Marcos Alonso is in a terrible situation at Chelsea. The Ex Bolton Wanderers football is currently Chelsea’s third choice left back. He has fallen behind to Ben Chillwell and Emerson Palmieri in the pecking order due to his disappointing performances last season. Marcos Alonso’s Chelsea’s contract expires in 2023.
Alonso came to the youth ranks at Real Madrid but only made 1 first team appearance for the Spanish rival. Marcos Alonso joined Chelsea from Atletico Madrid for 24 Million Pounds in 2014 has gone on to make 152 appearances. Marcos Alonso has not featured for Chelsea since their 3-3 draw with struggling Westbrom in September and he is set to leave in January to search for more game time.
Marcos Alonso was subbed off in that game against Westbrom at halftime. He opted to watch the second half on the team couch instead of watching with his teammates on the substitutes bench. This reportedly made Coach Frank Lampard angry and this may have prompted his decision not to field the Spaniard again.
Talks between Atletico Madrid and Chelsea are reportedly progressing and a deal could be reached soon.
Atletico Madrid currently have Renan Lodi and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco in their squad as left full back and the addition of Marcos Alonso to their squad could push Carrasco to a more attacking role.
Atletico’s move for Marcos Alonso is somewhat surprising considering that they need a Right back more than a left back. They have lost Kieran Trippier to suspension for the next 10 weeks.
Italian side Inter Milan are also reportedly interested in signing Marcos Alonso and could make a move for him soon.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Marcos Alonso as he reaches the twilight stages of his career.
