Chelsea’s approach to the summer transfer window has been really impressive. They have shown ambition and they are not resting on their oars. But this could come back to haunt them because they could lose players who are good but are not ready to compete.
That was the situation with Achraf Hakimi. Chelsea was a good option for him but he was not ready to compete with Reece James. He opted for PSG because he could walk straight into their starting eleven.Chelsea winger, Hakim Ziyech is also having the same issue. He’s suffering from the effect of tough competition for places. His countenance shows he’s already preparing to leave. He found himself in and out of the first eleven which made him less of the player he used to be.
French club, Olympic Lyon have shown interest in the Algerian and are ready to secure his signature. There’s no concrete offer on the table for now but they are working towards a year loan deal with an option to extend.Chelsea have not shown they are ready to let go of him but maybe a good offer may force their hands. A loan offer may get rejected because at 28, Ziyech is not getting any younger. At least they will look to recoup a large chunk of the 38 million pounds they paid to get him a year ago.
Ziyech’s first season as a Chelsea player was not really bad but, he would have wanted more involvement. He’s not the kind of player that would feel comfortable with a bench role. He featured in almost every match during his time at Ajax. So, he would not want to change that.Ziyech featured regularly under Frank Lampard too, but his issues with injury didn’t give him the chance to hold down his spot. As soon as he was getting over his injury problems, Lampard got fired. Then, there came Tuchel who would pick players based on their work rate.
Tuchel’s style of football is a bit challenging for Ziyech. He has the attacking skills. His understanding of the game is top notch, but he has issues with his work rate. Tuchel plays this kind of football that demands high pressing and it requires a lot of energy and apparently he struggled. It actually pays Ziyech to stay because Chelsea have a lot of fixtures at hand this season. They have the Super Cup and the Club World Cup. This means more fixtures than usual and it gets the players more playing time.
Imagine Erling Haaland having a creative wizard like Hakim Ziyech behind him at Chelsea. This would make a lot of sense and they would unlock tough defensive lines. Maybe Tuchel just needs to sit him down and get him convinced.
