The 2020/21 season of the English Premier League finally comes to an end today, the 23rd day of May. Chelsea have the chance to round off a rollercoaster season on a hugely positive note when they take on Aston Villa at Villa Park.
The Blues have had a season filled with ups and downs; after a very strong start to the season, a poor run of form under Frank Lampard saw Chelsea drop to 10tb position, seemingly out of the top four race and ultimately cost Lampard his job. But Thomas Tuchel has drastically changed the fortunes of the club, and they come into their final day clash against Aston Villa with the knowledge that a win will guarantee a third places finish, and a berth in next season’s Champions League. They are currently one point ahead of Liverpool and Leicester City on the log, so a draw or even a loss might still be enough to secure a top four finish, but that is dependent on results elsewhere, and they would obviously love to get a win to be absolutely sure, while setting the mood ahead of next Saturday’s Champions League final clash against Manchester City in Porto.
Manager Thomas Tuchel had earlier in his prematch conference confirmed that defender Andreas Christensen has regained full fitness, and is in contention to play today against the Villans. Duo N’golo Kante and Kai Havertz are both doubts, but Tuchel was optimistic that should they fail to make the squad for today’s game, they should be back in time for the UCL final.
Well no need for speculations, because the lineups for the final game of the season have been released!
For Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel makes one enforced change from the team that beat Leicester 2-1 during the week. Kovacic, whom came on as a sub in that game, starts in place of N’golo Kante, who misses out of the squad entirely. Kai Havertz is on the bench as Mount, Pulisic and Werner lead the line.
And here’s the lineup for Aston Villa:
The game is scheduled for 4:00pm, so we’re less than an hour away!
