What Frank Lampard said about Kante, Willian, others ahead Chelsea and Bayern clash

Chances are that this is also Frank Lampard’s final pre-match press conference of this longest season with Bayern Munich holding a 3-0 lead from the meeting at Stamford Bridge.

The head coach also has some significant selection issues heading into what already seemed a rather daunting challenge against the Bundesliga side.

Cesar Azpilicueta, Christian Pulisic, Billy Gilmour, Willian and Pedro are all confirmed absent through injury. Marcos Alonso and Jorginho are suspended.

N’Golo Kante has not played for a month because of a hamstring injury and if the Frenchman is not risked then there will be a surprise inclusion in midfield next to Mateo Kovacic.

Aside from team news and chat about the game, expect Lampard to field questions about Willian’s

What has Willian done for likes of Callum in terms of experience?
“He’s shown it on the pitch. Not really vocal but on the pitch he does his stuff. He always tries to improve. As a young kid, if you look at him it is an honour to train with him and ask questions. It was massive for the young guys.”

How good is this Bayern side?
“They are a good team, we all know. It will be a difficult night but as I said before, we have to go out and prove it to ourselves and show some pride.

First leg – not the real Chelsea?
“This is what we want to do. The way they beat us in the first game … we want to show pride. They have more to lose than us. That has to be to our advantage.”

“A young guy with loads of talent but not just because of Bayern Munich and lots of talks he wants these type of games. He’ll want to prove a point, definitely.”

“He’s a man of himself and makes the decision for himself. I don’t know the situation. If he goes, that will be a huge loss because after the restart people could see how important he was for us as a team.

Why have you conceded so many goals?
“It’s normal that people will criticise because we’ve conceded too many goals. This is something after this game we need to analyse and address and try to improve. That’s all.”

Rudiger is here. Over Saturday’s defeat?
“It’s a different competition. We were disappointed and yes we lost the first leg but we have nothing to lose. That can be something good for us. We just have to put in some pride and try the best we can.”

That’s all from Lampard
We should be hearing from Rudiger in the next few minutes so stay tuned.

Use 2012 to inspire the players?
“I won’t use that for this game but I’ll make them aware of the opportunity they have here to make sure they believe they can turn this game around. It’s been a long season for us but now we have a huge challenge to try and do something special. It will be very, very difficult. Don’t have to pretend that. Have to see them perform, I believe they will.”

Pulisic to miss start of next season?
“Six weeks, I think so. We have to treat the injury right. When Christian reflects on the first season, from where he has gone in the start he should be very happy. We’ll get him fit and ready. If he misses the first one or two games, we’ll hopefully have him after that.”

Need to be mature about it?
“Player has a freedom to player whenever they want when out of contract. We have to accept that and move on.”

“He’s been here for seven seasons. When I came in and we had issues with younger players, a transitional element, we relied on him for experience and quality. He has his own decision to make. Eden Hazard left last year, the club continues and tries to work forward. As we have done this season.”

Willian contract latest?
“Read a headline that mentioned disappointment. That doesn’t matter. Willian remains our player at the moment, he is injured. He’d have given everything to play. He’s carried this injury… as a club we’ve done everything we can to explain to Willian. Our relationship is really close but no disappointment if he moves on. A fantastic man and fantastic player. The club have acted very well in this. If he moves on I’ll wish him well.”

What do you say to the players?
“The conversation is about getting the game right as a whole. You have to respect what they have on the ball. We can’t defend the way we did at Stamford Bridge. We have to trust and move the ball confidently. We need to get our game spot on to try and turn this around.”

“I believe we can. We have to, the players have to. It’s a huge task. We have to understand the situation we’re in. Will be extremely tough. Games have turned to big degrees. We have to believe we have the opportunity to do something special. We’ve got to play with confidence. Can it free us up against a really good team? That’s what I expect to see from the team. We have to tackle this in the right way.”

“Pulisic out, Azpilicueta, Willian, Pedro out. Ruben and Kante are in the squad. They are fit to start both. Christian is probably a six week injury with Azpilicueta hopefully three weeks. Pedro as we know is moving on but hopefully six weeks after an operation. Willian’s is improving but not right for this game.”

Young players in the squad
Chelsea have got 23 players in Munich – including third-choice goalkeeper Jamie Cumming and academy products Lewis Bate, Dynel Simeu, Henry Lawrence, Ian Maatsen and Armando Broja
